What To Wear on an Alaska Cruise NCL Travel Blog

Some of the speciality restaurants on NCL Will have different dress codes to the main dining rooms. However just because there are no formal nights on Norwegian Cruises doesn’t mean that people do not dress up on NCL. While most cruises will have similarities when it comes to dress codes depending on the length of cruise and the itinerary.

Do people dress up on NCL?

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts. On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women. However, unlike Royal Caribbean, Norwegian hasn't retained any of the trappings of old-style cruising. There are no formal nights, as you'll still find on Royal Caribbean ships, or dress codes.

Le Bistro and Summer Palace require long pants (jeans, dockers, etc.), collared shirt, and close toe shoes. I always seem to err on the side of caution, perhaps it's b/c I've seen some pax turned away for not adhereing to the recommended dress code. I prefer the aft dining room and have seen some (especially men) turned away since they're wearing shorts and t-shirts... How well is it enforced, I don't know, since DH and I always dressed at the minimum or better. A member of our party was turned away at dinner in Cagney's for golf wearing shorts and collared shirt.

How many suitcases can I bring?

If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared. Members earn points for every night they sail on one of the line's ships. They get an additional point for every night they stay in a concierge room, a suite (not including stays in minisuites, or stays in suites resulting from an upgrade) or a room in The Haven.

Other miscellaneous items you may want to bring include a Polaroid camera for unique photo memories, a journal, and some extra money for souvenirs you might find during your journey. I have learned there are some items that I think are essential for any cruise voyage, whereas other items that I haven’t needed during my sailings. On a Norwegian cruise, you travel from destination to remarkable destination — and only unpack once. That said, cruisers tend to pack twice as many clothes they need. Remember, the key is to enjoy yourself, embrace the freestyle spirit of NCL, and dress in a way that makes you feel your best throughout your cruise journey. Packing for Alaska cruise shore excursions can be the most daunting.

By packing a variety of clothing options and being respectful of local customs, you can enjoy your port of call experiences to the fullest. In conclusion, while there are no strict dress requirements for formal nights on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, it is generally expected that guests will dress up a bit more than on other evenings. A suit or tuxedo for men and a gown or cocktail dress for ladies are typically appropriate choices. It's important to dress in a respectful and appropriate manner while still feeling confident and beautiful.

Adding some accessories like glowing necklaces and bracelets can add to the overall festive ambiance. One of the most exciting aspects of a cruise is the opportunity to participate in themed nights. Norwegian Cruise Line offers various themed nights, such as White Hot Party, 70s Disco, or Caribbean Night.

What not to bring onboard

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice. For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns. The line just recommends a step up to "smart casual" outfits in its more formal dining rooms and upscale specialty restaurants. In keeping with Norwegian's laid-backness, this might still mean nothing more than a crisper pair of jeans, or maybe slacks with a collared shirt, for men.

Dress Codes

In some cases, its ships have an exclusive area full of high-end cabins and suites called The Haven that comes with its own private pools, lounge areas and even restaurants. Instead of a few big main restaurants with fixed seating times, Norwegian ships offer a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times — just make a reservation. In restaurants, the cruise line asks passengers to not wear beach attire such as shorts, sarongs or flip-flops. From theme night accessories to faux formalwear, here's our Norwegian Cruise Line packing list of items you won't want to forget.

No bare feet, tank tops, caps, bathing suits or shorts are allowed in the dining room or specialty restaurants. In the casual Windows Cafe buffet, the only requirements are footwear and a cover-up or shirt. Though not part of the official Azamara dress code, conservative clothing for port activities that involve museums, restaurants, and religious sites is recommended. It's also worth noting that some Norwegian Cruise Line ships have a dress code for their main dining rooms, even on non-themed nights. While the dress code is not overly strict, it is recommended to adhere to resort casual attire. This means avoiding swimwear, tank tops, baseball caps, and flip-flops.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one. A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage. At the time of this story's posting, A The Haven two-bedroom family villa on Norwegian Jewel for a seven-night Alaska cruise in August 2024, for example, was going for $13,978 per person, based on double occupancy. That's more than 13 times the cost of the least expensive inside cabin (which was starting at $1,058 per person, based on double occupancy).

Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line may have themed nights or events that call for specific attire, such as a formal night or a tropical night. These events are optional, but if you choose to participate, make sure to pack the appropriate attire. Holland America's demographics tend to skew a bit older, and passengers pay attention to looking their best while maintaining comfort. Casual is the order of the day onboard, with most people choosing nice jeans or shorts and t-shirts or resort wear. Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages.
